A Legend Remembered: Special Screening of Celestine Ukwu’s Life and Legacy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka

The rhythm of timeless melodies is set to echo once again through the halls of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as the Institute of African Studies, in partnership with the Nigerian Senior Staff Club, proudly presents a special screening and documentary event in honor of the late Legendary Highlife Maestro – Celestine Ukwu.

This much-anticipated event will hold on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM at the Institute of African Studies Seminar Room, and continuing by 4:00 PM at the Senior Staff Club, UNN.

The Documentary: A Journey Through Music and Meaning

The documentary, directed by Chikezie Ifedobi, offers a rare and emotionally charged glimpse into the extraordinary life of Celestine Ukwu — a man whose soul-stirring compositions and philosophical lyrics defined an era of authentic Nigerian highlife music.

Through vivid storytelling and archival footage, Ifedobi recounts the thrilling journey of a young visionary who spent 37 years composing, recording, and performing with unmatched grace and mastery. Each scene captures not only his musical brilliance but also the depth of thought and cultural pride that shaped his art.

A Daughter’s Reflection, A Philosopher’s Insight, A Musicologist’s Tribute

Barr. Cynthia Ukwu

This special event will be graced by the only daughter of the late legend, Barrister Cynthia Ukwu, who is also the Founder of the Celestine Ukwu Memorial Foundation (CUMF). She will share heartfelt reflections on her father’s legacy, his creative spirit, and the enduring inspiration behind CUMF’s mission to preserve and promote his ideals.

Joining her will be Rev. Fr. Professor Francis O. Njoku, who will provide a philosophical lens on the spiritual and cultural depth of Celestine’s music — exploring the meaning behind his thoughtful lyrics and timeless rhythms.

In addition, Dr. Ikenna Emmanuel Onwuegbuna, a distinguished musicologist and expert on highlife traditions, will deliver an engaging exposition on why Celestine Ukwu remains one of the most authentic and influential voices in African music history.

More Than Music — A Celebration of African Heritage

This event is not just a film screening; it is a celebration of heritage, intellect, and artistic legacy. It’s an opportunity for the university community, students, scholars, and lovers of African music to come together in remembrance of a man who shaped the sound of his time and left behind melodies that continue to inspire generations.
