On September 12th, 2024, the Celestine Ukwu Memorial Foundation hosted its inspiring Back to School Summit, a vibrant event aimed at empowering children through education and skill acquisition. This summit, dedicated to fostering both academic excellence and practical skills, provided the perfect platform for students to start the school year equipped with motivation, knowledge, and a strong support system.
The summit, which took place in Umuavulu-Abor, in Enugu State, was not only a celebration of education but also a call to action for children to embrace both academic excellence and skill acquisition. It was a day filled with excitement, learning, and inspiration as guests, students, and dignitaries gathered for this important occasion.


















A Red Carpet Welcome and Distinguished Guest
The summit buzzed with excitement as guests and children arrived, greeted by the red carpet, where lively photo sessions and interviews added a sense of glamour to the day’s activities. The event was graced by a number of notable dignitaries, underscoring the importance of the initiative. Among those present were Reverend Fr. Christopher Chukwueze, the Parish Priest of St. Theresa Catholic Church, Umuavulu, His Royal Highness Igwe Chike Onodugo, Ujaligwa III of Umuavulu Ujaligwa, represented by the Palace Secretary, Mr. Pascal Ilouno , Barr. Ifeanyi Obodechi, Ibobo Ujaligwa, the President General of Umuavulu, Mr. Netchi Mbaeze, represented by Mr. Nicholas Ochi, Ifeoma Nnamani from the Centre for Memories, Mr. Godwin Obodechi, Mr. Emmanuel Aniatu, and Mr. Linus Uzongwa (Ochudo). The presence of these dignitaries reinforced the community’s commitment to its Children and their future.
The summit welcomed students from four local schools: Community Primary School Umuavulu, Charles Memorial Primary School Umuavulu, Afor-Abor Primary School, Abor, and St. Peter’s Primary School Abor. Each of these schools was accompanied by their headmistress and teachers, showcasing the Foundation’s broad reach and dedication to the educational development of these children.













Opening Ceremony and Inspiring Remarks
The event officially began with an opening prayer led by Fr. Christopher Chukwueze, setting a thoughtful and uplifting tone for the day. Thereafter, the Executive Director of Celestine Ukwu Memorial Foundation, Barr. Cynthia Ukwu, delivered a stirring opening speech and message for the children. She passionately encouraged the children to pursue academic success while also exploring new skills.
“Your education is the foundation for your future,” she told the students, “but don’t stop there. Explore new fields, learn new skills, and don’t hold yourselves back. If something inspires you—be it technology, craftmanship, or any other field—dive into it and grow.”

Barr. Cynthia Ukwu also urged teachers, parents, and community leaders to actively support the students’ growth, not only in academics but also in practical skill development. Her call to action resonated throughout the event, fostering an atmosphere of learning and empowerment.
Celebrating the Students
A heartwarming cake-cutting ceremony followed, honoring the children as they prepared to start another school year. The cake, presented by the Foundation, was a symbolic gesture marking the fresh start for these students, as they move forward with both educational and personal growth in mind.
The Celestine Ukwu Memorial Foundation’s generosity was on full display, as each child received educational materials, such as, school bag, pens, water bottle, sandals, socks, and books. These essential items will no doubt help ease the burden on families and ensure that the children have the tools they need to succeed.
In addition, the headmistresses and teachers from each of the four schools received umbrellas—a token of appreciation and a symbol of the Foundation’s gratitude for their protective and supportive roles in the children’s lives. The joy on the faces of the students and their teachers was evident as they expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the Foundation’s support.











The Power of Skill Acquisition
In a highlight of the event, Ifeoma Nnamani of the Centre for Memories, Enugu, delivered an inspiring speech on the importance of skill acquisition. She emphasized how skills, when combined with education, can pave the way for limitless opportunities. “Learning new skills,” she explained, “gives you an edge. It’s not just about what you know in the classroom, but what you can do with your hands and your mind outside of it.” Her words left a powerful impression on the audience, particularly the students, who were reminded that acquiring practical skills can complement their education and open doors to future success.
