“Building Healthy Relationships and Setting Boundaries: A Guide for Young Girls”
In her address, she emphasized the significance of fostering healthy relationships and establishing personal boundaries—a message particularly vital for the younger generation as they shape their identities and aspirations.

The Speech That Inspired a Generation

Good day, everyone!
It’s such a pleasure to be here today with all of you—young, brilliant, and full of potential. You are at an exciting stage in life where you’re growing, discovering who you are, and building relationships with the world around you. But as you navigate this journey, it’s important to understand something that will shape your future in powerful ways: relationships and boundaries.
The Foundation of Relationships
“Relationships are a huge part of our lives,” Barr. Ukwu began. She explained that relationships come in various forms—friendships, family connections, mentorships, and eventually, romantic relationships.
“The most important relationship you will ever have is the one with yourself.”
She encouraged the young audience to reflect on their self-worth and evaluate their current relationships:
- Are you kind to yourself?
- Do you believe in your worth?
- Are you surrounded by people who uplift you, not tear you down?
Barr. Ukwu highlighted that healthy relationships should feel like sunshine—warm, safe, and nurturing—while unhealthy ones often resemble a storm—uncertain, uncomfortable, and potentially harmful.
The Importance of Boundaries
Barr. Ukwu then delved into the often misunderstood concept of boundaries.
“Boundaries are not walls. They are bridges that help people understand how to treat you.”
She elaborated on the power of boundaries as a tool for self-respect and emotional well-being. Setting boundaries is not an act of rudeness but rather a demonstration of wisdom, confidence, and self-control.
Examples of Healthy Boundaries
- Friendships:
“If a friend is pressuring you to do something you’re uncomfortable with, you can say, ‘I care about you, but I’m not okay with that.’” - Online Spaces:
“If someone is making you feel unsafe or uncomfortable online, it’s okay to block them or speak up.” - Personal Time:
“It’s okay to say no when you need time for yourself. You are not responsible for pleasing everyone.”
Why Boundaries Matter
Barr. Ukwu underscored the importance of boundaries in protecting one’s mental health and emotional well-being.
“When you set boundaries, you teach others how to treat you. You create space for positive relationships and build a life that reflects your values and self-respect.”
A Closing Message of Empowerment
As the session drew to a close, Barr. Ukwu left the young attendees with a powerful message:
“Ladies, you have a superpower. It’s not in a cape or a magical wand. It’s in your ability to choose.”
- Choose relationships that uplift and inspire you.
- Choose to set boundaries that protect your heart and your dreams.
- Choose to love and respect yourself, because you are worthy of it.
She concluded with an inspiring call to action:
“As you walk this path, remember: You are strong, you are valuable, and you are capable of creating the life you deserve. Go out there and shine, knowing that healthy relationships and strong boundaries will always be your guiding light.”
Impact and Reflections
The summit left a lasting impression on the attendees, sparking thoughtful discussions and personal reflections. Many young girls expressed newfound confidence in their ability to navigate relationships and set boundaries that align with their values.
The Margaret Nnoka Foundation and the Celestine Ukwu Memorial Foundation will continue to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of Nigeria’s children by providing platforms for education, empowerment, and personal growth.
As we look to the future, one thing is certain: with leaders like Barr. Cynthia Ukwu at the helm, the next generation is poised to build healthy, fulfilling relationships and lead lives defined by self-respect, confidence, and purpose.
